Can citrus fruits such as a lemon or a orange clean dirty coins,and if so how?

I’m doing a school science project and I need more info. on how a citrus fruit such as a orange,lemon,lime, and a grapefruit can clean dirty coins. I would like to know why, and what is it that works as a cleaning aid.

citiric acid ( hence the name)…its an organic acid ( ie comes from something living) but I think its do with the acid ( its a weak acid) reacting with the oxidised layer on the coin to make them shiny again. The oxidised layer should be METAL ( whatever the metal is in the coin) oxide and a metal oxide+acid –> hmm thinking hmm maybe hydrogen gas and a salt and leaving metal clear.

I am pretty sure that carbonated drinks have carbonic acid ( form the carbon dioxide dissolving in the water) among other things…maybe added citric acid??

What’s a good way to clean old coins?

Is there a good way to clean old coins (mostly silver and copper) using simple stuff found around the house?

In general it decreases the value of a coin with little wear,if it is cleaned because the cleaning leaves abrasion marks and unnaturally discolors the coins. That being said, I just use soap and water and scrub lightly if there is a lot of dirt or green guck from damp storage. I carefully scrape off some types of chucks of corrosion with a sharp steel blade. WD-40 works well on steel coins and does okay on copper. Soaking in olive oil is a good cleaner for ancient copper coins that have been buried in the ground for a long time. A brass brush works well on Chinese Cash. (I tape my fingers with electric tape so that I don’t hurt the hand holding the coin.) A pencil eraser is best for cleaning zinc and aluminum coins.

How to clean old silver coins?

I dug up a 1956 half crown in my garden. I have tried every caustic substance know to man, but it remains the colour of an old penny (ie brown). Can anyone tell me how to restore it to its shiny original self?
Thanks in advance.

It sounds as if your coin is already beyond restoration, but try the methods at the link below. Never use acids or abrasives on coins. I hope that helps.

Where to find coin values and buyers?

My mother is interested in selling her old coins. I don’t know what their values are or even what they are. Is there a site, preferably with images, that says what they are, what they’re worth, and maybe who’ll buy them?

There is no site that will really help you. Coin collectors still use the old fashion items called books and printed price guides. They are just that guides. One is Coin Values by Coin World and they come out once a month. A coin dealer or magazine store will have them. They are retail guides so dealers pay 40% or more, less. It may be best to go to at least 2 coin dealers in your are and take the best offer. Don’t be disappointed if the old coins have little value for most do. High grade old coins have a better chance but common circulated wheat cents as well as other denominations, even real silver dollars that are in low circulated grades are only worth the silver value about $12 or so now. You can prepare by getting a price guide so you have at least an idea of the coins value. Also if there is a coin club in your area seek them out to help you.
